Hyperacusis: Understanding Sound Sensitivity and How the PWAH® Can Help

Hyperacusis is a condition in which everyday sounds feel uncomfortably loud or even painful. Simple noises such as clattering cutlery, traffic passing by, or the hum of household appliances can become overwhelming. This happens because the auditory system processes sound more intensely than usual, creating discomfort that is far beyond normal sensitivity. People with hyperacusis often experience stress, anxiety, and disrupted sleep as a result.

Sleep plays a crucial role in helping the brain manage sensory input. Unfortunately, many people with hyperacusis struggle to rest comfortably, especially if pressure on the ear triggers discomfort. Even the slight contact of a normal pillow can create irritation, vibration, or a lingering ache around the ear. This leads to restless nights and increased sensitivity the next day.

This is where the PWAH® offers quiet but meaningful relief.

Although the PWAH® was originally created for conditions such as CNH, ear surgery recovery, piercings, and hearing aids, customers with hyperacusis have found it extremely helpful. By supporting the head while allowing the ear to remain entirely free of pressure, the pillow removes a common source of irritation. People with sound sensitivity often report that avoiding physical contact around the ear makes settling to sleep noticeably easier.

The PWAH® features an adjustable design with a high quality YKK zip that allows the user to fine tune the firmness. It is filled with British made coil fibre or optional Yorkshire wool, both selected for comfort and durability. This customisable support is particularly beneficial for side sleepers who want to rest naturally without compressing the ear. The cheek and jaw are supported as usual while the ear remains suspended over the central opening. This reduces mechanical stimulation and encourages deeper and more restorative sleep.

Although a pillow cannot cure hyperacusis, improving sleep quality can reduce the overall stress on the auditory system. Better rest can make difficult days more manageable and help lessen the cumulative sensitivity that builds over time. For many people, the PWAH® becomes the first pillow that lets them return to comfortable side sleeping without fear of triggering discomfort.

Hyperacusis makes the world feel harsher than it should. The PWAH® helps make nights gentler, quieter, and more restful.
